GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ U.S. District Judge Timothy L. Brooks blocked enforcement of Act 689, the Arkansas law that required social media companies to verify user ages, ruling it violates the First Amendment and due process rights—limiting access for minors and adults alike. NetChoice, the trade group that filed the suit, argued the law imposed a content-based restriction that is not narrowly tailored to serve a compelling government interest. THV 11
- ➤ State Sen. Jim Dotson and Rep. Jimmy Gazaway introduced SB586—also called the Protect Our Constitution Act—which would require a 67% vote for future constitutional amendments, a change critics say would nearly end voter power to amend the state constitution. The bill passed out of a Senate committee meeting on Tuesday with few opponents present. Arkansas Times
- ➤ A federal judge ruled that the Social Media Safety Act was unconstitutional — the law would have forced platforms to verify user ages with government ID or biometric data and was found to burden free speech rights. Attorney General Tim Griffin said he respects the decision and is reviewing options while NetChoice welcomed the ruling. ABC7
