CULTURE NEWS

  • Writer Marcelo Hernandez Castillo, known for his acclaimed memoir and poetry collections, will read and discuss his work at Reves Recital Hall at Hendrix College in Conway on April 9th at 7:30 p.m.—admission is free.  Arkansas Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jeff and Katherine Arnold Johnson donated $1 million to Hendrix College to establish an endowed scholarship fund—college officials say the gift will support future students in accessing higher education opportunities.  Log Cabin Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill that would put the Arkansas Tobacco Control Board in charge of regulating consumable hemp products like Delta-8 THC cleared the state Senate today — it will go to a House committee next after passing with 26 senators voting in favor and six voting present — setting up a statewide regulatory structure.  Arkansas Times
  • ARDOT announced that the repair on the I-430 bridge hole is finished (cleanup work remains) and officials do not expect further closures.  THV 11
  • A bill that would ban ballot measures with titles above an 8th grade reading level passed a Senate committee on Wednesday and will now move to the full Senate. The measure was introduced by Rep. Ryan Rose and Sen. Mark Johnson to help ensure voters understand the language on their ballots.  Arkansas Times
  • Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed many bills into law on Thursday that change the rules for paid canvassers—now needing them to have one fixed home in Arkansas—and update state policies on health care and economic development. The laws also change how insurance payments are made and set new rules for professional practices.  ABC7

HEALTH NEWS

  • On March 3, Governor Sanders signed Act 396 into law, letting Arkansans buy ivermectin without a prescription for human use. Pharmacists worry the law will clash with federal rules because ivermectin is made as a prescription drug and may not have proper labels when sold—Act 396 will go into effect in June.  ABC7
