  • River Valley volunteers are stitching handmade quilts through Quilts of Valor to honor local veterans. The group (started by Sue Anderson and Donna Hardin) meets monthly to create unique quilts that provide comfort and recognition to those who served.  THV 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • The new series Red, white, and you will highlight Arkansans honoring veterans with quilts as part of the country’s 250th birthday celebrations. It aims to showcase everyday acts of service and generosity that strengthen the community.  THV 11
  • Faulkner County Master Gardeners were honored at The Garden Oscars in March — the event celebrated local talent with awards that recognized gardening skills and community dedication.  Log Cabin Democrat
  • Writer Ross Gay will speak at CALS Ron Robinson Theater on Friday, Apr. 10 at 6:30 p.m. in conversation with Oxford American editor & Arkansas Times contributor Frederick McKindra. The free event requires a reservation.  Arkansas Times
  • Once Upon a Mattress opened Friday in Conway, featuring comedy, great singing, and a towering bed built with 20 mattresses that offered a unique experience for local theater lovers.  Log Cabin Democrat

  • Pulitzer Prize finalist Jerry Mitchell spoke at UCA on Wednesday evening, sharing his war stories from civil rights investigations and a history lesson on Medgar Evers plus underscoring journalism's role in fighting injustice.  Arkansas Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Drowning remains the top killer for children ages 1 to 4, with nearly 90% of incidents occurring at home, the American Red Cross reports. Swim instructor Mackenzie Kester has launched Swim Station, LLC (serving Conway and Arkadelphia) to offer lessons that build water comfort and safety.  ABC7
  • Arkansas health officials say the 'Cicada' COVID variant (which returned after years of dormancy) is more likely to infect kids.  THV 11
