Two people died and nine were injured when a shooting occurred at a Conway park Sunday night.

Police said a deadly shooting (with one fatality) happened at a party in Conway on April 14th, and officers (without further details) are investigating the incident.

Hendrix College has renamed its student and alumni playwriting contests as the Werner Trieschmann Playwriting Contests to honor the Hot Springs playwright and educator who died last December after a stroke.

The change celebrates his role in Arkansas theater—winners have received cash prizes and one play will be given a staged reading this fall during Playwright’s Theatre.

Arkansas lawmakers will debate a balanced state budget, extra funds for correctional facilities, and proposed constitutional amendments this week and will finish most work tomorrow before a recess—wrapping up the 95th General Assembly session.

State lawmaker Stephen Meeks from Greenbrier got his Arkansas Nighttime Environment Protection Act passed in the House with 60 votes Monday—he has worked for 15 years to cut light pollution by limiting public lighting while allowing exceptions for key uses, a measure aimed at saving money, protecting health and boosting rural tourism. The bill now goes to the Senate for review before the legislature adjourns on Wednesday.
