CULTURE NEWS

  • UCA will host designer Korto Momolu for an artist residency starting Sept. 29 when she leads workshops for fashion students. The residency will conclude on Oct. 21 with a public reception at Reynolds Performance Hall—where a new AIDS Memorial Quilt panel honoring those lost to HIV/AIDS will be unveiled.  Arkansas Times

  • Fed cuts have raised concerns in Arkansas over a stagnant housing market and changing mortgage rates — local buyers are watching for shifts in home financing trends. Local experts will monitor the situation as market changes could affect future home purchases.  THV 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tiffany L. Head was selected as the new director of media relations at UCA—she will lead the communications team immediately.  Log Cabin Democrat
  • On Sept. 10, the Conway School Board met and discussed paraprofessional raises, new staffing roles, and a reallocation of funds while celebrating student achievements (with Conway High School rising from 37th to 26th in state rankings). The board approved adding $1.9 million to the operating budget and reviewed a new behavior plan alongside a proposal on legal representation for a ten commandments lawsuit.  The Echo

  • Sen. Boozman said help was needed for Arkansas farmers — local farmers in Central Arkansas agreed that more support is needed to keep farms running.  THV 11
  • The council approved three ordinances on Sept. 9—one for the Rachael Ray No-Kill Excellence Grant that will fund a new 22-kennel adoption trailer for the animal shelter, one to detach a property at 5875 Highway 319 West due to high service costs, and one to rezone a property at 603 Polk Street. All measures were approved unanimously— and the next council meeting is set for Sept. 23.  The Echo
  • Arkansas is joining a regional effort to remove duplicate voter registrations—states will remove extra registrations when individuals move out after living in one state, as Secretary of State Cole Jester explained. The One State, One Vote Initiative will help prevent voting fraud and keep voter records accurate.  ABC7
  • Since September 1, Act 590 has banned vape sellers from using marketing that appeals to minors and requires retailers to remove non-listed disposables by November 1—inspectors will fine $1 per non-compliant unit. Some students say the law could keep young people safe while others worry it might drive vape sales underground.  The Echo
