COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ CALS is collecting winter clothes for people in need as part of the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive — Chloe Kilcrease with the Central Arkansas Library System said donations will help local families stay warm. THV 11
- ➤ THV11 is partnering with Kroger — along with the Arkansas Food Bank — to collect turkeys and sides to help neighbors in need. THV 11
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jason Black, interim superintendent of Conway Public Schools, is one of four finalists for the permanent superintendent job after the board ended the previous superintendent's contract—interviews with the candidates will be held on Dec. 8, 10, 11 and 17. The other finalists are Jennifer Barbaree of Pine Bluff, Tamekia Brown of Waco and Bruce Gearing of Leander. Arkansas Times
- ➤ Equal Protection Project filed a civil rights complaint against UCA on October 28 with the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights, alleging that 10 scholarships restrict eligibility in violation of Title VI and Title IX+ UCA said it regularly reviews its scholarship criteria but has not yet been notified while the department evaluates the complaint. - ➤ Hendrix College signed an agreement with UCA on Oct 30 that gives students in health fields a streamlined way to apply to UCA’s grad programs. Eligible juniors must meet specific requirements, and the deal—developed over 18 months of talks—aims to keep skilled health professionals in Arkansas. The Echo
- ➤ UCA has created the Northwest Arkansas Advisory Council—made up of seven alumni who met on Sept. 22 at Hunt Tower in Rogers—to build stronger ties with the growing region. The council will meet twice a year to share ideas and guide the university's future. The Echo
- ➤ UCA has received approval to offer ISTE Certification for Educators through its ITEC graduate program—paving the way for educators to gain a recognized technology certification. This new certification will provide future teachers with improved skills in education technology. Log Cabin Democrat
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Due to the government shutdown, many Arkansas families have experienced delayed SNAP benefits and local food banks in Conway have reported increased demand. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders will send a $500,000 emergency grant to help food banks as state officials urge donors to provide nonperishable food items. The Echo
